England. C. 1944-05. Before the invasion of Normandy the Services carried out many combined operations invasion practices, which were filmed by the RAF Film Unit. This picture shows smoke-laying by Boston aircraft during one of those exercises. A phosphorus smoke bomb, dropped by the first of the two aircraft, burst prematurely in the air as this photograph was taken. Another bomb has fallen accurately and burst on the ground.
