Outdoor portrait of five Australian Prisoners of War (POW) in the courtyard of their POW camp at Soltau near Hanover, Germany. Identified in the back row on the left is 3720 Private (Pte) Francis (Frank) Carr, 4th Machine Gun Company, from Brisbane, Queensland who enlisted at the age of 27 on 11 September 1915 and embarked for overseas on 30 November 1915 aboard HMAT Suffolk. He was wounded and captured at Riencourt, France, on 11 April 1917 and held as a POW until repatriated to England on 31 December 1918. Pte Carr arrived back in Australia on 31 May 1919. In the back row on the right is 2375 Pte Donald Fraser, 13th Battalion, from Bourke, NSW, who enlisted at the age of 41 on 8 June 1915 and embarked for overseas on 20 August 1915 aboard HMAT Shropshire. He returned to Australia with enteric fever in March 1916 but proceeded overseas again in December 1916. After rejoining the 13th Battalion, he was captured at Riencourt, France, on 11 April 1917 and held as a POW. Pte Fraser was repatriated to England on 26 December 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 20 May 1919. Identified in the front row on the left is Pte Alfred George “Sandy” MacNab, 13th Battalion, from Strathfield, NSW, who enlisted at the age of 21 on 12 February 1916 and embarked for overseas with the 45th Battalion on 24 August 1916 aboard HMAT Anchises. He was wounded and captured at Bapaume, France, on 11 April 1917 and held as a POW until repatriated to England on 26 December 1918. Pte MacNab arrived back in Australia on 27 February 1920. Sitting in the front row centre is 5773 Pte Arthur George Greasley, 13th Battalion, from Coorparoo, Queensland, who enlisted at the age of 21 on 19 January 1916 and embarked for overseas with the 15th Battalion, on 4 May 1916 aboard HMAT Seang Choon. He was wounded in the right foot and also captured at Bapaume, on 11 April 1917 and held as a POW until repatriated to England on 26 December 1918. Pte Greasley arrived back in Australia on 16 May 1919. Sitting on the right is 4815 Pte John Faull, 16th Battalion, from Midland Junction, Western Australia, who enlisted at the age of 28 on 28 July 1915 only to be discharged for disorderly conduct two months later. He re-enlisted on 6 January 1916 and embarked for overseas on 1 April 1916. He was reported missing in action in France on 11 April 1917 and later confirmed to be a POW. Pte Faull was repatriated to England on 31 December 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 1 June 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E.
