Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX22347 Lieutenant (Lt) George Hamilton Lamb, 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion, Australia, Palestine, Dutch East Indies, and Thailand, 1940-1943.
Collection consists of:
- 1 x last will and testament of 'George Hamilton Lamb, BA, JP, MLA.'
- 6 x letters from Marie Lamb, wife of Lt Lamb, to their eldest son Winston during the period she was in hospital, 1940-1941. She died in February 1941, prior to Lt Lamb's embarkation. Their three children Winston, Anthony and Ainslie were raised by their aunt Florence Rodan. The letters largely express sentiments such as how proud Marie is of her children, and that Winston should look after his younger siblings and cousins.
- 2 x commemorative pieces relating to the death of Lt Lamb, including an order of service for a commemorative service in 2003 (held on the 60th anniversary of his death) held at the Victorian State Parliament, and a modern reprint leaflet of 'The Ballot: poems and essays by Hamilton Lamb'
- 1 x page of hymns entitled 'Christmas Palestine 1941', with annotations.
- 1 x letter from Lt Lamb to his twin sister Florence Rodan, dated 15 December 1941.
- 1 x letter from Lt Lamb to his son Winston dated February 1942, sent from Java. The letter is not written in Lt Lamb's handwriting and comes with an accompanying typed transcript .
- 10 x letters written by Lt Lamb to his son Winston, dating from September 1940 to January 1942. The subjects largely covered in the letters are: (briefly) what Lt Lamb is doing while on active service, for Winston as the eldest child to take care of his siblings and other members of his family, and general life advice to Winston.
- 1 x letter card dated 2 September 1941 from Lt Lamb to Winston wishing him happy birthday.
George Hamilton Lamb died of illness on the Burma Railway on 7 December 1943. He was the Member for Lowan in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1935 until his death in 1943.
