Wallet 1 of 1 - Letters relating to the Second World War service of Lance Corporal Hedley Spencer Crapp, 1941
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX40492 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Hedley Spencer Crapp, 2/18 Battalion (infantry), Australian Imperial Force, 1941.
Wallet 1 of 1 contains four original letters sent to his family in Australia by Crapp, and written from Malaya in 1941 before he became a prisoner of war of the Japanese in Sandakan, North Borneo. Three of the letters were written to his daughter Jill, who was a young girl at the time. These letters, including one written inside an illustrated Christmas card, mention Jill's older sister Lola, as well as the presents he bought to send home to the girls. The fourth letter was written on a small thin wooden card, with accompanying envelope, from Crapp to his brother Lawrence Stanley (Stan) in Australia, wishing him a 'Happy Xmas and prosperous New Year' from Singapore where he was on leave. Crapp died from illness in Borneo on 23 April 1945.
