Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of WX13426 Private George Pulford Richards, 2/43 Australian Infantry Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Middle East, 1942.

Wallet 1 of 1 consists of one telegram and two letters from Private Richards to his children, Shirley and Milton Richards. Richard’s correspondence to his children was written between 6 January and 7 July 1942, while he was serving with 2/43 Australian Infantry Battalion in the Middle East. In his letters, Richards writes about the cold weather in Syria, sending gifts home, hopes for his children’s future, receiving mail, living in sandy Egypt, seeing large numbers of planes fly overhead to bomb German lines, hiding from German bombers in slit trenches, sharing parcels of food with his fellow soldiers, and being frugal with water. He also explains why he left Australia to fight in the war and responds to news from home. This file contains:
