Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 771A Private Clyde Eugene Rowell, 12 Australian Infantry Battalion, Australia, France, 1917-1918.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of six postcards and one greeting card sent by Rowell during his service with the 12th Australian Infantry Battalion in France. The messages are addressed from Rowell to his mother, youngest brother Jack, and other unnamed family members, and are dated between 16 July 1917 and 15 June 1918. He writes about the time he spent in Bendigo before leaving Australia, and his experiences during his service in France. He mentions that he retrieved the postcard dated 28 May 1918 from the pocket of a French soldier who had been killed in action, and there are faint remnants of the previous message written in French behind Rowell's writing. He also sent well wishes on Easter and his mother's birthday in 1918. The embroidered postcard dated 16 July 1918 has a small picture enclosed within the decoration.
