Description
Studio portrait of Mrs Mabel Powell and her seven children. Left to right: back row: Daniel, Mrs Powell, John, William and Edward James (sitting on chair). Front row: Patricia, Joe and Mabel junior. Edward later served as 3579 Private Edward James Powell, 13th Battalion A.I.F. and died, aged seventeen, of wounds after the battle of Pozieres on 1916-08-14. He and his mother were subjects of a poem written by the poet John O'Brien (the Roman Catholic priest Father Patrick Hartigan, author of 'Around the boree log'). "The Parting Rosary" tells of the farewell party given for Edward who then said a parting rosary with his mother prior to embarking for overseas service.
