Hirano, Masuto (Japanese POW)
Description
Letter of appreciation written at Nadzab after the cessation of hostilities by a Japanese POW, Masuto Hirano, who was captured on Bougainville, to Private K D Cooper, a guard on detachment from 2/22nd Battalion. Hirano mentions his decision to surrender rather than commit suicide, pre-war Australia-Japan relations, and the attack on Pearl Harbour.
