Fragmentation grenade with wooden handle
Description
The grenade has a wooden handle with an impact percussion top, and provision for a fuse to be lit with a match. Lengths of steel rod are bound around an explosive charge that is contained in a cylindrical tin case which is attached to the handle with screws. Manufacturer unknown, but possibly French.
History / Summary
Information about this type of fragmentation grenade is limited. John Laffin suggests that the type was used by the French Army in France in 1916 but it is not known whether they were issued officially or manufactured in `trench workshops' (refer to his letter in `Wartime' No.7, Spring, 1999, p.71.).
