Informal portrait of Major (Maj) Geoffrey Gordon McCrae dressed in civilian clothing. Prior to his enlistment with the AIF on 19 August 1914, he served with the 58th Battalion, Citizens Military Forces. Maj McCrae embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata on 19 October 1914 as a member of C Company, 7th Battalion. He was a member of the first convoy to Egypt and also served at Gallipoli Peninsula. He was killed in action on 19 July 1916 at Fromelles, France, whilst serving with the 60th Battalion.
