Portrait of 5623 Private (Pte) James John Meotti, 27th Battalion from West Croydon, South Australia. A 22 year old painter prior to enlisting on 11 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 15th Reinforcements from Adelaide, South Australia aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) on 28 August 1916. After disembarking in England, he proceeded to France to join his battalion in November. On 22 April 1917, he was wounded in the hand while cleaning his rifle without having first adjusted the safety catch and was evacuated to hospital spending three months away from his unit undergoing medical treatment and recuperation. Three months after returning to his battalion, he was killed in action on 4 October 1917 and buried in the Passchendaele New British Cemetery, Passchendaele, Belgium.
