Description

Studio portrait of 2903 Private (Pte) Lewis Stanley Warren, 44th Battalion from Tambellup, Western Australia. A 27 year old general store manager prior to enlisting on 14 September 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements from Fremantle, Western Australia on 29 December 1916 aboard HMAT Persic. After a short period of further training in England, he joined the 44th Battalion in Belgium where he was killed in action at Passchendaele on 14 October 1917. Pte Warren is buried in the Passchendaele New British Cemetery, Belgium. His younger brother 1384 Pte Clarence Hampton Warren, 32nd Battalion, was killed in action at Fromelles, France on 20 July 1916.
