Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX70153 Captain Arthur William Hence, MBE, 2/18 Australian Infantry Battalion. Consists of one original handwritten diary and nominal roll kept by Captain Hence as Adjutant to 1 Battalion POW (prisoner of war) under Colonel G Ramsay. The diary begins in May 1942 in Changi with the details of an announcement of a 3,000 strong working party to go overseas, and later entries discussing the voyage, conditions on board ship and communications with Japanese captors. The diary goes on to discuss camp conditions, daily life, names of individuals, the construction of an airfield, movement of men to Tavoy, deteriorating conditions and increasing casualties, and ends in September 1942. The collection also consists of an original document entitled 'House Rules for War Prisoners' relating to POWs and issued at No. 3 Branch Office of Thai War Prisoners at Thanbyuzayat, dated 15 September 1942; and seven photocopied letters and receipts relating to health issues at the POW camp, and the medical and food supplies supplied to the camp. Captain Hence was Camp Adjutant at Tamarkan, Thailand.
