"This world cannot exist half slave and half free"
Description
An American propaganda poster from the Second World War depicting a group of civilians standing in the shadow of a member of the German military brandishing a cat-o'-nine-tails. The group of civilians includes a family with two children, and a clergyman. The quote at the top of the image is an appropriation of former US President Abraham Lincoln's "A house divided" speech, and likens a Nazi victory in the war to the presence of slavery in pre-Civil War era America. The use of the family and the clergyman reinforce the threat to freedom and morality that Germany represented.
