Description

Letter (7 pp) dated 14 August 1915 written by Roland Edwards to his mother and family while a patient in Number 2 Australian Hospital, Heliopolis, Cairo (Egypt) after being wounded during active service with the 3rd Battalion on Gallipoli. Includes references to the good treatment received in hospital, a vivid description of the attack on Lone Pine on the evening 6th August ('very hot work') during which the writer was wounded in the face. Contains some thoughts on his facial injury and assurance to his relatives as to its limited extent. He also criticises aspects of apparent mis-management of operations on Gallipoli, notably the poor provisioning arrangements for Australian troops. Includes an explanation of the Anzac acronym. The letter was sent to Australia via a soldier comrade thus avoiding the attentions of censors, which may explain the explicit descriptions and sometimes critical views expressed about the fighting and conditions on Gallipoli.
