Description

Goldspink speaks of his family background and his military background during the Second World War; his work experience leading to his enlistment in the Army; recruit and infantry corps training; pre-embarkation leave, then joining 1 RAR training at Kaitachi in Japan; the battalion's move in April 1952 to a reserve position behind the main defensive line in Korea; 1 RAR's occupation of a position on the main defensive line, relieving a Canadian battalion; the organisation of a rifle section; the organisation of, preparations for and the conduct of patrols; minefields; medical evacuation; clothing worn, especially winter clothing; the Chinese Army; Australian soldier capabilities and unit morale; leave in Japan; the relief of 1 RAR by 2 RAR, and his posting to the Reinforcement Holding Unit (RHU) at Hiro, Japan; the nature of training at the Commonwealth Division Battle School at Haramura, Japan; return to Australia after two years in Korea and Japan, and his postings over the next seven years; experiences at the US Army School of Infantry at Fort Benning in Georgia USA; his instructional posting at the Officer Training (OTU) at Scheyville New South Wales; his service in South Vietnam with 5 RAR in 1967 then with the Australian Reinforcement Unit as company sergeant major (CSM); return to Australia as regimental sergeant major (RSM) at the Royal Military College (RMC) Duntroon; career decisions, his enjoyment of service life and his rejection of an opportunity to join the Western Australia Police; further postings in the Army; return to RMC Duntroon as the Ceremonial Officer, before taking his retirement.
