Formal portrait of 220788 Warrant Officer John D Coughlan, Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (CGM), RAAF. On 23 May 1968, he was awarded the CGM (Flying) in recognition of his gallantry, skill and devotion to duty, while a helicopter crewman, during rescue operations in Vietnam. The then Corporal (Cpl) Coughlan served as an aircrewman gunner with 9 Squadron, RAAF from 25 April 1967 to 23 April 1968. The CGM had only previously been awarded to ten RAAF members since it was instituted in 1943. This 11th award to Cpl Coughlan is the only CGM awarded to an Australian since the Second World War.
