Description

Collection of papers relating to General Sir Henry George Chauvel, consisting of diaries, letters, photographs, reports and albums. Relates to his early military training with the Darling Downs Mounted Infantry and involvement in the shearers's strike in 1891; his service in the Boer War with the First Queensland Contingent; post-Federations military service, and First World War service including action at Gallipoli, Palestine, Beersheba and Damascus. Included are letters exchanged between Lady Chauvel and members of their family and letters of condolence written to her after his death in 1945. Correspondents include Field Marshal Lord William Birdwood, Prime Minister Frank Forde, General Godwin and General Philip Chetwode.
