Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 18715 Sergeant Clive Lander Neill, Electrical and Mechanical Mining and Boring Company. The collection contains two versions of the same diary: an original diary dated January 1917 (when Neill arrived in France) to December 1918, carried and written by Neill through his war service and a manuscript copy of the original probably compiled post-war, with entries dated May 1916 (when Neill enlisted in Australia ) to August 1919, with many entries significantly rewritten and expanded from the original. They describe Neill's travel from and return to Australia, raids and sports events, visits to locations in France, shelling and bombardments, and movements and action around the Front with references to Jesus Farm, Messines and Ploegsteert and mentions of the 'Great Push' on July 31 1917. Also included in the collection is an autograph book consisting of autographs, poems and sketches; a hand-written note of places; and a typed list of people referred to in the diaries.
