Description
Diaries written by 32312 Lieutenant Athol Hugh Lewis documenting his service with 12 Field Artillery Brigade and 31 Battery during the First World War. Covering the period from May 1916 to October 1918 Lewis recounts his enlistment in February 1916, training as a gunner in the Field Artillery at Maribyrnong Victoria and his departure on the SS Osterly. Other detailed daily entries document training at Salisbury Plains, battle operations in France, troop movements, conditions in camp, court martials and leave in Australia and England. Lewis also recorded meetings with visiting dignitaries, including Prime Minister William Hughes.
