Berry, John James (Private, d.1917)
Description
Personal diary of 4010 Corporal John James Berry (12th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion) from his embarkation from Australia in January 1916 (given as '1915' in the first entry) until April 1917. It documents his travel to Egypt on the "Miltiades"; thence to France and his experiences from May 1916 in and behind the front lines, describing trench fighting (including shelling, casualties, gas attacks, trench structures, etc), unit movements (with numerous references to towns and locations) and his involvement in major battles (including Pozieres, Third Battle of Ypres and Bapaume). Berry was killed in action on 10 November 1917.
