Raven, William George (Lance Sergeant)
Papers of 1817 Lance Sergeant (L Sgt) William George Raven who served with 29 Battalion and the 5th Pioneer Battalion in Egypt during the First World War. L Sgt Raven's detailed diary entries commence with his voyage on the transport ship SS Ascanius in November 1915. He then describes activities and training in Cairo, a visit to the 1st Australian General Hospital (1AGH) at Heliopolis and impressions of Egyptian life and Indian troops. Entries for 1917 and 1918 record action on the Western Front in France including battles at the Somme 1917-18, Bapaume 1917, Bullecourt, Ypres 1917, Menin Road, Polygon Wood, Passchendaele and Amiens, 1918. Also, a number of letters were written by L Sgt Raven to his family covering the years 1916-1918. Correspondents include Mrs W G Raven and Edie Raven.
