Maddren, Eric (Private, b.1896 - d.1941)
Description
Letters, diaries and 3 postcards relating to the First World War service of 17480 Private Eric Maddren, 4 Divisional Signal Company. Pte Maddren enlisted in Fremantle, Western Australia and embarked aboard the HMAT Shropshire on 11 May 1917.
The collection contains letters written to Pte Maddren's aunt from 1917 to 1919; a loose-leaf diary detailing the voyage aboard the Shropshire from May 1917 to 18 July 1917; and a small bound diary. The diary was commenced by 17467 Sapper Frederick Garnet Reed, who also embarked on the HMAT Shropshire in 1917. His entries date between 8 August 1917 until 14 August 1917. The diary then appears to have been used by Pte Maddren, with short entries dating between 23 September 1917 to 17 June 1919.
