Gammage, John Kingsley (Private, b.1887 - d.1945)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 1764 Private John Kingsley Gammage, 1 Battalion. Collection consists of a typed transcript of a diary kept by Gammage while on Gallipoli, covering the period April 1915 when he departed Sydney to February 1916 when he was in Egypt. The diary graphically describes the conditions on Gallipoli; the conflict, particularly the Battle of Lone Pine where he was wounded; the Australian evacuation; and return to Cairo. A list of place names relating to the conflict ends the diary. The original diary is held at PR83/117. Gammage survived the war, returning to Australia in 1919.
