Summer jacket : Private J H Peken, Victorian Mounted Rifles
Unlined khaki cotton drill summer jacket as worn by members of the Victorian Mounted Rifles (VMR). Loose fitting jacket has a stand collar, double darts on each side of the front collar, shoulder straps, side panels with a curved back seam to shape the back of the jacket, and pleated front patch pockets with deep semi-circular covering flaps that were distinctive to the VMR. The front of the jacket fastens to hip level with five brass Colony of Victoria 'PRO DEO ET PATRIA' buttons. The buttons only were made by Bowley & Co, Melbourne. There is a single brass hook set into the right side waist and two brass hooks set into the left waist to support a belt and equipment. The shoulder straps are missing their brass titles.
This jacket was worn by 141 Private John Henry Peken of the Victorian Mounted Rifles. In 1897 he attended the celebrations for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in London as part of the official contingent sent from the Colony of Victoria.
