Although the break-up of Ford Madox Ford and Stella Bowen had its share of bitterness, Bowen painted this bleak picture about his absence. She had refused to continue the relationship when Ford became involved with Rene Wright, an American widow.

The empty chair is a respectful but sombre reminder that it was he who left their home, but Bowen has also painted a view through the window, as if forcing herself to look beyond his departure.
