14 Squadron RAAF
14 Squadron RAAF
14 Squadron was formed at Pearce in Western Australia on 6 February 1939, as a General Reconnaissance-Bomber Squadron. It was equipped with Anson and, later, Hudson aircraft.
Early in the Second World War unit aircraft provided convoy escorts for troopships, as well as conducted seaward and coastal patrols along Western Australia’s remote northern coastline. In 1941 anti-submarine patrols were flown and the squadron assisted in the search for HMAS Sydney. On 2 March 1942 a Hudson pilot was also ordered to attack a unidentified craft. The craft turned out to be the USS Sargo, which was damaged but escaped intact. Uniquely 14 Squadron remained based at Pearce for its entire existence. It was disbanded on 10 December 1945.
