The 13th Brigade was a composite "all states" Brigade made up of 49th, 50th, 51st and 52nd Battalions. The brigade was formed in Egypt in February 1916 as part of the scheme to split and duplicate the AIF and drew its initial draft of experienced personnel from the 3rd Brigade. The new brigade was made up of battalions from the "outer states". The 49th Battalion was made up of troops from Queensland; the 50th Battalion from South Australia; the 51st Battalion from Western Australia; and the 52nd Battalion from South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. The brigade served with the 4th Division of the AIF.
