Description

Wood and aluminium plaque commemorating the losses of 35 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, in Malaya, Sumatra and Java 1941-42. The aluminium panel, which is attached to the timber plaque with four brass screws, has been hand engraved. In the centre is a perspective view of a flat-topped monumental obelisk in front of crossed flags which have been painted with red and blue enamel. The right hand flag is the Union Jack, while the left is a red and blue Royal Artillery banner. The front face of the obelisk shows the badge of the Royal Regiment of Artillery above the words: 'TO THE MEMORY OF MEN OF 35TH L.A.A. WHO DIED DURING THESE CAMPAIGNS'. The side, or angled face has the Royal Engineers' 'flaming bomb' badge above the crudely scratched dates 'DEC 8 1941 TO MAR 8 1942'. At the top of the obelisk is the word 'MALAYA', and at its base 'SUMATRA'. The base of the angled face has the word 'JAVA'. On the reverse of the plaque, a flat piece of aluminium with its top edge bent into two loops has been nailed on, forming part of a stand, the remainder of which is missing.
