The heritage main building revitalisation will include two new beautiful spiral staircases and lifts, improving visitor navigation from the new Main Entrance Foyer up to the existing exhibition spaces.
Works to the heritage main building will be complete by 2028 and include:
- New Spiral staircases
- Two new lifts
- Reoriented central stairs
- Refurbishment of existing gallery spaces
- New galleries, including a renewed Discovery Zone and Pre-1914 Conflicts
The sacred heart of the Memorial – including the Commemorative Area, the Hall of Memory, and Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier – will remain unchanged. This includes the galleries for the First and Second World Wars and the Cold War.
Pre-1914
The Pre-1914 Galleries will include deeper depictions of all pre-1914 conflicts and be developed post 2025 as part of the main building works. They include conflicts from contact in 1788, First Nations resistance to colonial forces, the New Zealand Wars, Sudan, the Boer (South African) War and the Boxer Rebellion.
The Memorial is committed to the recognition of the experiences of First Nations peoples. The development process for this gallery will include audience evaluation and a community engagement program.
