End of night watch shift, 6.30 am, HMAS Kanimbla
Description
Figure of a Australian seaman on night watch. Peter Churcher recalled, "This painting was the second version of the same subject I had painted up on the observation deck earlier. I began work between 6 and 6.30 am to capture the first light of day hitting the deck. The person who had been standing there all night observing and reporting the activity out at sea. In the foreground of the painting are the instruments used to observe more carefully objects at a distance. The person in the painting is fully rugged up with jacket and beanie as the nights were very cold. The warmth of the day had not yet set in."
