Images and other material: Images and other non-text material on this website fall under a number of different categories that are set out below along with details of relevant permitted use. It is your responsibility to identify the correct category any such material falls into and ensure that your use of it strictly complies with all requirements and permissions.

Third party copyright

Where copyright is owned by a third party you may need to contact the owner to get permission to reuse the material.

The Australian War Memorial and the Commons on Flickr

The Memorial is a member of the Commons on Flickr.

Images from the Memorial's collection that are part of the commons have no known copyright restrictions, which means that the Memorial is not aware of any current copyright restrictions on this work. This can be because the term of copyright for this work may have expired, or that copyright does not apply to this type of work. Many images with 'no known copyright' are being made available for public download through the Australian War Memorial's pages on the Commons on Flickr.

The Memorial is participating in the Commons on Flickr to increase public access to its collection and to seek help from the public to identify people, places and events in the images.

The Memorial does not represent or warrant that the use of the images shared on The Commons will not infringe upon the rights of third parties, as yet unknown, who may own rights to these works. It is your responsibility to determine and satisfy copyright and other use restrictions that may apply to these works.

It is the policy of the Memorial to charge usage fees for the commercial use of these images. This helps fund ongoing efforts to care for our collection. If you are interested in using these images for a commercial or profit making purpose, please contact us for more information.

Copyright and Memorial collection material

The majority of the images that appear on this website, including photographs, works of art and documents, and other material such as film and sound files, are taken from the National Collection of the Australian War Memorial. Much of this material is subject to copyright protection.

Obtaining permission

Items from the National Collection usually display a "copyright status". This is a term that gives an indication of whether copyright protection applies to the image, and accordingly whether permission should be sought prior to its use. These terms are listed below:

Commonwealth of Australia copyright

This term describes material held in the National Collection, where the copyright protection period is still in force and the copyright owner is the Commonwealth Government.

This can also include Statutory Authorities and other semi-autonomous government agencies operating under their own Acts. This term does not describe material created by State or local Governments.

Please see the Department of Communications website for more information on Commonwealth Copyright.

A high quality reproduction of this collection item may be purchased from the Australian War Memorial's eSales Unit.  In this case, a user fee may apply to your intended use of the reproduction.  In addition, conditions of use will apply to all high quality reproductions supplied by the eSales Unit.
