Description
Captain Eugene Gorman, K.C., the Commissioner for the Australian Comforts Fund, and a prominent racing man in Australia, organised a race meeting in Palestine, which took place just before some of the troops moved across to Egypt. It was a tremendous success and was watched by 8,000 spectators, many of whom were Arabs, who perhaps derived more enjoyment from the meeting than the diggers themselves. A Tote was organised, and in the true Australian traditions, celebrations were continued well into the night. In this photo the Sergeants" Mess entertains friends at the conclusion of the race meeting.
