Leyte Island, Philippines. Major General Valdez, Chief of Staff of the Philippines Army shakes the hand of a Filipino Private soldier who received a Purple Heart award. During action in the Bataan campaign in 1941 to 1942 he was captured and subsequently escaped from the Japanese. Major General R. J. Marshall, Chief of Staff United States Armed Forces in the Far East, who made the presentation, praised the heroism and devotion to duty of the recipients.
