Description

Labuan Island, Borneo. c. 10 June 1945. Indonesian natives were very happy to be under British rule once more. These two men show their appreciation by serving coconut juice to Trooper (Tpr) J. H. Scott of Woods Point, Vic, Kenneth Sykes, Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) representative of Perth, WA (centre), and Tpr Joe Mealing of Coogee, NSW. Sykes was formerly in the Australian forces. He was captured in Crete, spent two and a half years as a prisoner of war (POW) in Germany and returned to Australia fourteen months ago. He was discharged from the Army and is now doing a solid job supplying the forward infantry companies with hot drinks and other comforts.
