THE MAJESTIC CLASS LIGHT FLEET AIRCRAFT CARRIER HMAS SYDNEY. THIS SHIP WAS LAUNCHED ON 1944-09-30 AS HMS TERRIBLE AND WAS UNFINISHED AT THE END OF THE WAR WHEREUPON WORK ON HER CEASED. THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT ARRANGED TO BUY THE VESSEL SO IT WAS COMPLETED AND HANDED OVER TO THE RAN ON 1948-12-16 AND RENAMED SYDNEY. FROM SEPTEMBER 1951 TO JANUARY 1952 SYDNEY SERVED WITH THE UNITED NATIONS COMMAND IN KOREAN WATERS WHERE HER AIRCRAFT CARRIED OUT 2366 SORTIES. ON 1953-10-19 SHE SAILED FOR A FURTHER PERIOD IN KOREAN WATERS RETURNING IN JUNE 1954 FOR A REFIT. IN APRIL 1955 SYDNEY BECAME FLEET TRAINING SHIP AND SUBSEQUENTLY PAID OFF ON 1958-05-30. RECOMMISSIONED AS A TROOP TRANSPORT ON 1962-03-07 THE SHIP FILLED THAT ROLE UNTIL PAID OFF ON 1973-07-20. SHE WAS SOLD ON 1975-10-30 TO THE DONG KUK STEEL MILL CO LTD OF SEOUL, FOR $673516 AND DEPARTED FROM SYDNEY, UNDER TOW, ON 1975-12-23. DURING A GREAT PART OF HER ACTIVE LIFE SYDNEY SERVED AS FLEET FLAGSHIP.
