Description
Sub Lieutenant Peter Ailwood, Officer of Quarters, aboard HMA Fairmile Motor Launch ML 426, communicating with gunnery control by telephone. Commanded by Lieutenant (Lt) R C Pockley, ML 426 conducted operations along the northeastern coast of New Guinea from April until November 1944. From the start of August 1944, when command was handed to Lt H C Eyers, she was one of eight Fairmiles formed into the New Guinea Motor Launch Flotilla based at Mios Woendi [Wundi] (east of Biak Island) as an anti-submarine force and was involved in the strafing of a number of Japanese positions at Wafordori and Korim Bays.
