Silhouette drawings of the Grumman TBF-1 Avenger torpedo bomber aircraft used for aircraft ...
Description
Silhouette drawings of the Grumman TBF-1 Avenger torpedo bomber aircraft used for aircraft recognition purposes. Production aircraft appeared in January 1942 and, as a carrier borne torpedo bomber, the TBF Avenger was destined to be highly successful against Japanese seapower. The Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm relied on the TBF Avenger as its chief carrier based torpedo aircraft and a number of the aircraft were operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Avengers were used in all parts of the Pacific, South East Asia and the India/Burma theatres. Lack of Japanese shipping eventually resulted in missions being almost exclusively against land targets using bombs and rockets and interception by Japanese fighter aircraft became increasingly rare.
