Description
Burma-Thailand Railway. 1945. A railway carriage known as a salt wagon. Approximately 40 men were packed into each carriage during travel, without ventilation. The average speed of the trains was only 10 miles per hour, so short journeys could take several days and nights. The men in the doorway are probably members of the War Graves Unit party whose task was to inspect graves and unearth records relating to the Japanese soldiers who supervised the prisoners of war (POWs).
