Description

Starboard side view of the Japanese passenger vessel Asama Maru. The Asama Maru was order by Nippon Yussen K.K. and entered service on the Japan San Fransisco line in September 1929. During the second world war she was use as a fast transport by the Imperial Japanese Navy. On 1940-01-20 she was intercepted by the British cruiser HMS Liverpool 50 miles south of Yokohama and German officers and technicians en route for Japan were removed. She also carried prisoners of war (POW) including a group of POW's who were embarked at Macassar on 1942-10-14 and transported to Nagasaki arriving 1942-10-24. This group of POW's were held at Fukuoka No 2 POW camp and were employed at the Kawanami shipyards. (Naval Historical collection)
