Description

View taken from the bridge of the British transport ship HMAT Ballarat, showing the ship's boats laden with troops, after being torpedoed by a German submarine in the English Channel. Efforts were made to tow the ship to shallow water failed and she sank off The Lizard the following morning. No lives were lost of the 1752 souls on board. Her escort, HMS Phoenix, can be seen in the background.
