The War Memorial at Adelaide, South Australia. Constructed from a winning design by Messrs Wood, Bagot, Jory and Laybourne-Smith, of Adelaide, by the South Australian Monumental Works Ltd, the memorial occupies a prominent position on North Terrace at the corner of Kintore Street. Within the main arch and on the obverse is a winged figure representing the spirit of duty, bearing a cruciform sword, the symbol of battle and sacrifice. Before it is a group symbolising youth at the instant when it realises the call of duty. On the revers, the winged figure reappears, this time symbolising the spirit of compassion and with the sword sheathed. The statuary, it may be noted, was modelled by Mr G Rayner Hoff ARCA, of Sydney, who also modelled figures for the Sydney Memorial. Doorways at the side lead to a crypt in which are memorialised the names of the 6,000 South Australian dead, arranged under the 90 units in which they served.
