Description
Troopers cleaning a Lewis gun in a front line trench, while others keep watch (right). A foghorn is being used as a gas alarm (centre left). A note by Sergeant A Brooksbank, Gas NCO, 10th Australian Infantry Brigade: Strombos horn for cloud gas attacks. The rubber tube leads to an air pressure cylinder not shown. Horn correctly installed; it points along trench and not into opposite wall. Note bad gas discipline - all repirators should be in 'Alert' position on chest in trenches. Note simple wind vane. Incorrectly placed, where there is a regular line, wind vane should be set back from it on highest point).
