Description

Portrait of George Witton. Witton was a member of the Bushveldt Carbineers, a mainly Australian force raised in South Africa to fight the Boers in Northern Transvaal. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for his part in the alleged shooting of Boer prisoners in the 'Morant Handcock Affair'. His life sentence was overturned by the British House of Commons on 11 August, 1905.
