Studio portrait of 1642 Sergeant (Sgt) William George Spencer MM, 3rd Field Artillery Brigade. A native of London, England, Sgt Spencer was a stockman from Brisbane, Qld prior to enlistment and embarked with the rank of Gunner from Brisbane on HMAT Rangatira 25 September 1914. After serving at Gallipoli, he later went on to serve on the Western Front where he was promoted to Bombardier and awarded the Military Medal. Later promoted to Sergeant, he returned to Australia on 23 October 1918.
