Western Transvaal, South Africa, 1901-09. Elevated view over the Elands River and its valley, a year after the siege of the nearby Elands River Post. In 1900-08, a small force composed mainly of Australians and Rhodesians had held out for thirteen days against far stronger Boer forces until a British relief column arrived. (Donor I. Craig)
