View of the beach at Waga Waga Village, New Guinea, scene of an abortive landing by the Japanese. It was following this landing that the Japanese received their first decisive defeat on land, Milne Bay, New Guinea. Dargie noted, "Kure J, Special Landing Force, was the Japanese Force which made the landing at Milne Bay. This sketch shows an anchor, a Japanese skull on the beach and, in the background, a stranded & holed invasion barge. The drawing is intended to be a study for a larger symbolic painting".
