2/4 Australian Infantry Battalion positions at near Alikarnassos
Description
The Australian positions were on extreme top right of picture, the meteorological station at hight point at left. In the depression running up the centre of the scene was a cornfield in which the German parachutists landed and were driven from, when the Australians set fire to the cornfield and drove them out. This action took place while the 2/4th Battalion were attached to the 14th (British) Infantry Brigade in a determined defence of Heraklion airfield, in May 1941.
