Canal, Helwan
Description
Depicts a group of Egyptians carrying water away from a freshwater canal in Helwan, which is near Cairo. Other groups are working in the fields. In the distance are hot baking chalk-white hills. The sparse shade cast by the tree in the foreground seems inadequate. This is part of the artist's Syria Campaign series. The campaign involved Australian troops, mostly from the 7th Division, fighting alongside allied troops against the Vichy French in Syria and Lebanon.
