Description
The sketch depicts several groups of uniformed soldiers standing in the courtyard at Smith Barracks in Acre, Palestine (now 'Akko, Israel). Herbert was appointed official war artist in February 1941. He noted that during his commission 'I sketched first of all in the camp areas in Palestine, then went back to the desert and the coast at Mersa Matruh' (broadcast by H.B. Herbert, 29 March 1942; see file: 206/002/003 03).
